“Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Energy and Innovation Summit 2016 will celebrate Mi’kmaq Nation success creating innovative community economic development projects, and it will share the knowledge gained from creating those projects with people from across Canada and around the world.”, says Steve Parsons, Vice-President, Beaubassin Mi’kmaq Wind Management Ltd.

The Summit will showcase a joint venture between an indigenous community, government, and business, of a type that meets The Paris Climate Accord’s mandate to engage indigenous people when creating clean energy projects to reach COP21 targets.

Representatives from Acadia, Annapolis Valley, Bear River, Eskasoni, Glooscap, Membertou, Millbrook, Paqtnkek, Pictou Landing, Potlotek, Sipekne’katik, Wagmatcook, and Waycobah First Nations will present their stories of how they created innovative community energy and development projects.

Beaubassin Mi’kmaq Wind Management Ltd. will tell their story of how they created wind energy projects collectively owned by all Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Bands. Government officials and business leaders will give presentations on topics such as energy efficiency and tidal energy. The project’s structure (the Feed-in Tariff and the legal setup) can be emulated by other developers in other jurisdictions.

“Businesses will be able to create joint ventures by speaking directly with representatives from each of Nova Scotia’s 13 Mi’kmaq communities.”, says Mr. Parsons. The Summit will provide great opportunities and ideas for new marine renewable venture worldwide!
