Marine Renewables Canada Welcomes Canada-Nova Scotia Agreement to Adopt “One Project, One Review”

Halifax (Nova Scotia), March 27, 2026 – Marine Renewables Canada (MRC) welcomes today’s announcement by the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia to accelerate major project development through a new bilateral agreement adopting a “one project, one review” approach for major infrastructure initiatives. This streamlined process will be critical for advancing transmission infrastructure – an essential enabler for unlocking Canada’s offshore wind potential.
Under the one project, one review model, projects that would have previously required both a federal impact assessment and a provincial environmental assessment will now follow a coordinated and streamlined regulatory process. This approach will reduce duplication, shorten review timelines, and improve regulatory clarity. These changes are expected to enhance investor confidence and support major infrastructure development, including initiatives such as the Wind West offshore wind opportunity.
“Today’s announcement reflects the kind of coordination needed to unlock Canada’s offshore renewable energy potential,” said Elisa Obermann, Executive Director, Marine Renewables Canada. “A single-window approach to approvals will provide greater certainty for industry, reduce duplication, and help ensure major infrastructure projects move forward efficiently while maintaining strong environmental and regulatory standards. This is exactly what the sector needs to compete globally and deliver clean, reliable energy at scale.”
Nova Scotia has already taken important steps to accelerate clean energy development, including reforms to environmental assessment processes and the establishment of a regulatory framework for offshore wind. These efforts are helping create a clearer, more efficient path forward for projects while supporting climate goals and economic growth.
MRC is calling on governments to meet this moment by prioritizing and investing in the critical transmission infrastructure needed to unlock Nova Scotia’s offshore wind potential.
