Marine Renewables Canada welcomes Nova Scotia offshore wind target
Today the Province of Nova Scotia announced that it will be pursuing five gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind development by 2030, a target that will drive growth of the industry in Canada.
It is expected that a competitive bid process jointly managed by federal and provincial governments will be launched in 2025. With some of the best offshore wind resources in the world and favourable seabed, Nova Scotia is well positioned to develop offshore wind at a scale that can be used to produce green hydrogen for domestic and export needs, as well as support further decarbonization of the electricity grid.
“This target signals the ambitions Nova Scotia has for offshore wind and our industry is ready to help deliver on those goals,” said Elisa Obermann, executive director of Marine Renewables Canada. “Offshore wind holds huge potential for clean electricity, green fuel production, and new opportunities for businesses and communities. We are very pleased to see Nova Scotia and Canada embracing this opportunity.”
This announcement comes several weeks after a Joint Declaration of Intent signed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to establish the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, an agreement to enable Canada to export green hydrogen to Germany by 2025. Earlier this year the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia also announced the intent to establish a joint management regime for offshore renewable energy, as well as the commencement of a regional assessment of offshore wind.
“The announcement today, coupled with ongoing work by the federal and provincial governments is helping to define the market and regulatory framework for offshore wind in Canada and Nova Scotia. Marine Renewables Canada is looking forward to continuing our work with government, Indigenous groups, stakeholders, industry, and our members to move ahead with next steps to build this industry that will help address climate change, contribute to a sustainable economy, and integrate responsibly with existing ocean users,” said Obermann.
