Attendees learned more about how their business can get involved and benefit from the growing marine renewable energy sector.

May 25, 2022 | Webinar – Offshore Wind Energy in Atlantic Canada: Geological Constraints & Opportunities

The potential for offshore wind development in Atlantic Canada is quickly becoming a hot topic and with good reason – the region has some of the best sites in the world for both fixed and floating offshore wind development from both a wind resource and geophysical perspective.

This webinar featured Jordan Eamer, Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), who provided an overview of preliminary work led by the GSC to assess geological constraints and opportunities. Several Atlantic Canadian sites with available high-resolution geophysical data were reviewed for comparison with production and planned offshore wind farm sites found elsewhere.

April 21, 2022 | Webinar – Offshore Wind in Atlantic Canada: Opportunities & Challenges

In the context of aggressive development of and competition for acreage in the US Eastern Seaboard for offshore wind, emphasis on renewable sourcing of energy and climate change, and the development of hydrogen as a fuel source are today’s hot topics.  Additionally, using the immense resource available off the Atlantic Coast of Canada for offshore wind development, is increasingly becoming an attractive proposition.

This webinar, jointly hosted by MRC and Cox & Palmer, provided insights on:

  • The legal and regulatory framework for offshore wind development in Canada – what do we have and what we need;
  • How experiences in offshore oil and gas development in Newfoundland and Labrador can be translated to offshore wind development regulation and operations;

March 30, 2022 | Webinar – Offshore Wind in the US: Market insight and updates

In the lead up to Marine Renewables Canada’s (MRC) mission to the International Partnering Forum for Offshore Wind (IPF) in late April, MRC hosted a pre-mission webinar focused on providing the most recent insight on offshore wind development in the United States.

This webinar was designed to provide mission delegates, as well as MRC members and Canadian companies, information on the current state of offshore wind in the US. Brandon Burke, Vice President of Policy & Regulatory Engagement at the Business Network for Offshore Wind provided attendees an update on the status of offshore wind projects, recent policy and regulatory activities, and supply chain opportunities.

November 16, 2021 | Webinar – Maine: Pathway to US Offshore Wind Market

The emerging US offshore wind industry is projected to generate $70B USD in investments in the next decade alone.

Marine Renewables Canada, in partnership with the Consulate General of Canada in Boston, and supported by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, hosted a webinar on November 16th that provided attendees an overview of latest offshore wind developments in Maine, southern New England, and the mid-Atlantic.

This webinar explored Maine’s unique advantages and key role in the international offshore wind supply chain, and identified opportunities for Canadian companies, governments, and academic institutions to partner with Maine to access the growing US offshore wind market.

October 6, 2021 | Webinar – Supply chain opportunities in the US offshore wind market: Insight from Crowley Maritime

Crowley, founded in 1892, is a privately-held, U.S.-owned and operated logistics, government, marine and energy solutions company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. Services are provided worldwide by four primary business units – Crowley Logistics, Crowley (Government) Solutions, Crowley Shipping and Crowley Fuels.

Crowley formed its New Energy division strategically focused on diverse services supporting the energy sectors in the U.S. and adjacent regions. Within the offshore wind industry Crowley is focused on providing turn-key solutions for the offshore wind supply chain using its assets and experience in the US maritime industry.

Edward C. Anthes-Washburn is the Director of Business Development for Crowley Shipping, a division of Crowley Maritime Corporation. Prior to joining Crowley in 2021, Ed served as CEO and Port Director of the Port of New Bedford, MA from 2015-2021. He is also the Co-Founder and Vice Chair of the New Bedford Ocean Cluster, a non-profit network that develops offshore wind supply chain opportunities for local businesses and fosters new technology and collaboration in the marine sector.

Marine Renewables Canada, in partnership with the Consulate General of Canada in Boston, and supported by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, hosted a webinar on October 6th that provided attendees an overview of Crowley Maritimes’ activities in the offshore wind industry, and their approach to forming partnerships with this developing supply chain.

June 24, 2021 | Webinar – U.S. Jones Act and its implications for Canadian companies in the offshore wind supply chain

The Jones Act is a federal law that regulates maritime commerce in the United States. It requires that transportation of merchandise and passengers between two points in the U.S. must be made by qualified US-flag vessels that are built, owned and operated by U.S. citizens. As the nascent U.S offshore wind industry develops, the Jones Act will have implications for how offshore wind projects are planned and constructed.

Marine Renewables Canada, in partnership with the Consulate General of Canada in Boston, and supported by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, hosted a webinar on June 24th where Felisa Elayne Sanchez, Of Counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP provided attendees an overview of the Jones Act and how it applies to Canadian companies looking to enter the offshore wind supply chain

February 24, 2021 |Webinar – Latin America (Brazil) Inside Insights: Opportunities in Marine Renewable Energy

Latin America hosts some of the world’s most dynamic renewable energy markets and has signaled an ambition to use its renewable resources to achieve a low-carbon energy transition, identifying a regional goal of reaching at least 70% renewable energy in electricity by 2030 – a significant proportion of which should come from non-conventional renewable energy. In addition to the historical role of hydropower and pioneering moves with biofuels, countries in the region are significantly scaling up other renewable energy sources.

The Brazilian market in particular, has been an area of recent focus in the region as initiatives in renewable energy continue to grow and attract international players. With nearly 8,000 kilometers of coastline, Brazil has immense potential for offshore wind power and recently launched an Offshore Wind Roadmap to better understand the potential for development.

Marine Renewables Canada, with international business consultant Marcos Miranda as the main presenter, hosted a webinar on Feb 24th providing attendees the opportunity to learn more about the expanding renewable energy market in Latin America and what opportunities exist for Canadian companies.

March 11, 2020 | Workshop – Business Readiness Workshop for US Offshore Wind Energy Market

Marine Renewables Canada (MRC) is leading the development of an Offshore Wind Energy Strategy which includes both near-term and long-term actions. The near-term work is focused on assisting Canadian and Atlantic Canadian businesses pursue and secure opportunities in international offshore wind (OSW) energy development, particularly in the Northeast United States where there is a window of opportunity to get involved.

As part of this strategy, MRC is leading a mission to the International Partnering Forum for (IPF) for Offshore Wind taking place in Providence, Rhode Island August 18-21 (REVISED DATES).

In advance of the IPF mission, MRC, in partnership with ACOA and the Nova Scotia Department of Energy & Mines, hosted a workshop to assist mission delegates as well as MRC members and Atlantic Canadian/Canadian companies with interests in pursuing opportunities in the US OSW market.

February 21, 2019 | Session – Offshore Wind Supply Chain Information Session

While the offshore wind sector is still predominantly resident in the UK, Europe we are beginning to see projects appear in the United States and there is growing potential here in Canada. The arrival of CETA (Canada EU Trade Agreement) makes it easier for Canadian firms to take their resumes of accomplishment into wider markets.  Next door in the United States offshore wind is also beginning to emerge as a similar market of opportunity. 

Here at home Canada too has a major opportunity to advance offshore wind energy. Beyond domestic offshore wind opportunities, Canadian companies can also participate in a rapidly expanding international market. Globally, there are over 80 offshore wind projects operating in 15 countries and at the end of 2016, there were 12,193 MW of offshore wind installed and an additional 6,300 MW under construction.

This session featured presentations from international speakers from Scotland, Germany and the US who provided attendees insights into projects in their regions, challenges & success, developing a supply chain and opportunities that may exist.

March 27, 2018 Webinar | Spotlight on Asia: Market Study for Marine Renewable Energy in Asia

To further support members’ business development in Asia and to build a more robust market strategy, Marine Renewables Canada commissioned a market study with support from Global Affairs Canada, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Nova Scotia Department of Energy.

This webinar featured presentations from the authors of the report (Envigour, ITPEnergised, and Ocean Pixel). They provided participants with the findings from that market study, including exploration of several jurisdictions in Asia and analysis of general renewables growth and policy opportunities; market design and support; marine renewables resource opportunities and attractiveness for the Canadian supply chain. They also identified jurisdictions with the most potential for Canadian engagement and outlined a strategy to assist with Marine Renewables Canada’s future international business development efforts in Asia.

The European Union (EU) has prioritized development of the sector, recognizing its potential to help meet clean electricity and carbon reduction targets. France is recognized as a leading jurisdiction in marine renewable energy development in the EU and globally. This is largely due to the level of public support and private investment that has gone into the sector, a focus on innovation and technological improvements, and the level of growing activity towards building a supply chain.

This webinar provided participants with a development update on the marine renewable energy industry in Europe and specifically France, including information on projects (current & planned), policy, research & development and innovation clusters.

May 4th, 2016 | Class 43.1, 43.2 & CRCE

Class 43.1 and 43.2 are capital cost allowance classes in the Income Tax Regulations that allow for accelerated write-off of certain specified clean energy generation and energy conservation assets. These costs include the cost of acquisition and installation of the property.

Under the Regulations, certain assets that generate electricity using wave or tidal energy qualify. Canadian Renewable and Conservation Expenses (CRCE) are a category of expenses designed to encourage investment in projects for which it is reasonable to expect that more than 50 percent of the capital cost would qualify for inclusion in Class 43.1/43.2.
