SUMMARY:Ask an Expert | Engineering Canada’s Offshore Wind Future
DESCRIPTION:Offshore wind holds enormous promise\, but what does it actually take to build it? \nIn the next edition of Marine Renewables Canada’s Ask an Expert webinar series\, we’re diving into the engineering behind offshore wind development. From the data that tells us where projects can work\, to the foundations that hold them in place and the cables that carry power back to land\, every component requires careful planning and thoughtful design. \nOffshore wind projects don’t begin with turbines\, they begin with understanding ocean conditions\, seabed characteristics\, and feasibility constraints. Our experts will walk us through how metocean and geotechnical data shape design decisions\, how projects move through front-end engineering and design\, and why certain sites are better suited to monopiles or jackets. Active in offshore wind for more than a decade\, he led JBO’s structural offshore team from 2014–2022\, became Director Offshore in 2022\, and was appointed Managing Director in 2024 while continuing to lead Offshore. His work focuses on the development and optimization of offshore foundations\, towers\, and structural connections\, drawing on deep design and analysis expertise to deliver reliable\, cost‑efficient solutions for offshore wind farms. \n  \nBlair MacDougall  \nPresident\, Waterford Energy Services Inc.   \nBlair MacDougall\, Founder and President of Waterford Energy Services (WESI)\, and cofounder of Technical Energy Solutions an industrial services company\, has led the company since its inception in 2003. With nearly 30 years of industry expertise\, he manages day-to-day operations\, specializing in both offshore renewable\, hydrogen and non-renewable energy projects. This session will highlight how regional collaboration\, innovation\, and infrastructure are supporting the deployment of offshore wind projects in island and remote environments. \nParticipants will gain insights into: \n\nThe role of maritime clusters in accelerating offshore wind development\nKey projects\, capabilities\, and supply chain opportunities in the Canary Islands\nLessons learned and best practices applicable to other regions\, including Atlantic Canada\nOpportunities for international collaboration and industry partnerships\n\n \nMeet the Presenters: \n \nNicola Lombardi Ruiz\, Project Manager – Canary Islands Maritime Cluster \nNicola Lombardi has been a Project Manager at the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster (CMC) since 2023. In this role\, he manages innovation projects in the blue economy\, overseeing project development\, drafting deliverables\, and supporting event organization and communication tasks. He is responsible for implementing various projects in which the CMC participates or leads\, managing timelines\, budgets\, and work planning. He fosters partnerships across industry\, government\, universities\, and civil society\, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement and communications. Additionally\, Nicola organizes working groups and events\, planning the CMC’s involvement in sector events and trade fairs to enable maritime companies to collaborate\, innovate\, and grow. \nNicola holds a degree in Industrial Organization Engineering from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2023). His Final Degree Project focused on the study of the capacities of the Puerto de la Luz\, aimed at supporting the storage and equipment necessary for the assembly and manufacturing of floating renewable energy structures. This experience has given him deep knowledge of the port sector and floating offshore wind energy. He is also skilled in renewable energies\, especially offshore wind and photovoltaic solar energy. Known for his adaptability and proactivity in learning\, Nicola is committed to driving sustainable development in the maritime sector. \n  \n \nManuel Ruiz de la Rosa\, Director – Environmental Consulting\, Oceanography\, and Coastal Engineering (ECOS) Group \nManuel Ruiz de la Rosa is the co-founder and CEO of ECOS Estudios Ambientales y Oceanografía S.L. / Ecos Group\, a Spanish environmental consultancy specialised in the marine environment\, applied oceanography\, environmental impact assessment\, offshore monitoring and marine renewable energy. He has extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams in the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments\, marine baseline studies\, environmental monitoring programmes and permitting-related documentation for complex coastal\, marine and energy projects. In the offshore wind sector\, he has played a key role in positioning ECOS as a specialist provider of baseline studies and environmental monitoring services\, including seabird and marine mammal surveys\, benthic and sediment characterisation\, water quality assessment\, underwater noise\, oceanographic studies\, GIS analysis and impact assessment. \nManuel has also driven the development of ECOS’ Digital Aerial Surveys capabilities\, integrating high-resolution imagery\, LiDAR and AI-supported data processing to generate robust information on species distribution\, abundance\, density and bird flight heights for collision risk assessment. His profile combines strong technical knowledge of marine environmental assessment with strategic project leadership\, regulatory understanding and international business development experience in demanding offshore wind markets. \n  \nSantiago Díaz Ruano\, Head of the Renewable Energy Section – The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) \nPhD. Santiago Díaz Ruano has a Degree and Master’s in Electrical Engineering (University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria\, Spain) and PhD in Engineering in topics related to renewable energy forecasting and machine learning techniques (Doctoral Program of Chemical\, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering\, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria\, Spain). \nHe has been working at the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) since 2012. Santiago has contributed to the elaboration of the Canary Islands Energy Planning. References: i: DOSE – Directrices de Ordenación del Sector Energético 2012 – 2020; ii) EECan25 – Canary Islands Energy Planning 2015-2025; iii) PTECan – Canary Islands Energy Planning 2021-2030; Energy strategies for PV self-consumption\, energy storage\, geothermal energy\, marine energy\, management generation\, green hydrogen and demand side management). He also has collaborated in other insular energy planning such as in Galápagos Islands\, Caribbean Islands and other European Islands. \n  \nAlejandro Romero Filguera\, Head of Research Line in Renewable Resources – Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) \nAlejandro Romero-Filgueira is an Electrical Engineer from 2005 and MSc in Renewable Energies. He developed his professional career from 2005 to 2019 in the energy sector as a Technical Consultant specialised in Predictive Maintenance and Commissioning in the electrical power system. In those years he became a senior expert in electrical machines diagnosis\, specialised in power transformer life cycle management. \nAlejandro Romero-Filgueira is currently employed as a R&D Project Manager in The Oceanic Platform of The Canary Islands\, within the Renewables Research Line\, where he was involved in H2020 funded project FLOTANT about Floating Offshore Wind as a Coordinator; and in H2020 funded project WATERTEYE about O&M tools for the Offshore Wind sector\, MAESHA about the Smart Energy Management in isolated territories\, HarhsMoP about sensoring in floating substructures\, etc. He coordinates the activity of PLOCAN within the REMAR network and is the responsible of the Testing Infraestructure Harshlab 0.5 for testing materials in real sea conditions. He is the Coordinator of H2 Verde\, which is part of the R&D Complementary Plans (PRTR) funded by EU Next Generation. This project aims to install an offshore electrolyser powerd by marine renewable energies and demonstrates the uses of the green hydrogen in the blue economy sector. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Data for Decision Making Webinar Series | The Living Laboratory: Sable Island Science and Offshore Wind
DESCRIPTION:Sable Island is unlike anywhere else in Canada. This remote sandbar in the middle of the Northwest Atlantic has been home to continuous scientific observation for generations\, building one of the most valuable long-term environmental records in the country. Join us for this special edition of MRC’s Data for Decision Making series as we explore what that legacy means for offshore wind development in Atlantic Canada.  \nWe’ll be joined by four expert panelists from Parks Canada\, the Geological Survey of Canada\, Fisheries and Oceans Canada\, and Environment and Climate Change Canada\, each offering a distinct perspective on the island’s research ecosystem. The session will trace Sable Island’s history as a long-term environmental monitoring program and cover active research across three key areas: geological surveys\, seal ecology and seabird ecology. Panelists will also speak to the methodologies that make the island such a productive research platform\, and how its geographic isolation and protected status have enabled the kind of long-term observation that few sites in the world can support.  \nThe webinar will also address Sable Island’s extensive meteorological data record – one of the longest and most detailed in the Northwest Atlantic – and how this historical dataset can inform wind resource assessments\, site characterization\, and environmental baseline work for projects in the region.  \nWe’ll close by drawing together the broader picture: what Sable Island’s research ecosystem means for the offshore wind industry\, from environmental impact assessment to long-term monitoring\, and how this unique platform can support responsible development in Canadian waters.   \nDon’t miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Atlantic Canada’s research ecosystem and engage directly with the scientists leading Canadian marine research!   \n \nMeet the Speakers   \nDan Kehler – Park Ecologist\, Parks Canada  \nDan Kehler has worked for Parks Canada since 2005\, and as Park Ecologist for Sable Island National Park Reserve since 2016. He holds M.Sc degrees in biology and statistics\, and his background includes ecological monitoring and population dynamics. As park ecologist\, Dan works with research partners to expand the natural science knowledge and further conservation of Sable Island. Working for Sable Island National Park Reserve is the experience of a lifetime.   \n  \nRobert Rinconi – Wildlife Biologist\, Canadian Wildlife Service   \nRob Ronconi lives in Halifax where he has worked for the Atlantic Region of Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) since 2014.  His career has been focused on the ecology\, conservation\, and management of marine birds\, including a PhD at the University of Victoria studying marbled murrelets on the west coast and post-doctoral research positions at Dalhousie and Acadia Universities studying shearwaters\, gulls\, terns\, and storm-petrels.  Currently with CWS\, his role as the Wildlife Emergency Response Coordinator includes planning and response to oil spills and avian influenza outbreaks. His work on Sable Island has included studies of gulls\, terns\, and Ipswich sparrow to assess population status\, foraging ecology\, migration pathways\, risks to offshore oil and gas infrastructure\, and recently studying the prevalence and transmission pathways of highly pathogenic avian influenza.  \n  \nJordan Eamer – Marine geoscientist\, Geological Survey of Canada  \nJordan was born and raised on Vancouver Island in British Columbia\, where his research interests in coastal geomorphology and Quaternary geology developed. Jordan’s research has always been focussed on the coastal areas of BC\, where he worked up and down the coast in areas such as Haida Gwaii\, the Hakai Protected Area\, and western Vancouver Island. His focus was sediment budgets for coastal restoration projects\, climate change adaptation\, coastal erosion\, and late Quaternary reconstruction and paleogeography. He did a postdoc at the University of Calgary where he acted as a project manager/science advisor for Remotely Piloted Aerial System application development. He still is fortunate to continue to research on Canada’s Pacific Coast as well as extensive use of RPAS in his research.   \nJordan joined the federal Public Service with Parks Canada Agency in 2017\, working for the Sable Island National Park Reserve. While there\, he worked in operations: landing planes\, forecasting storms\, and fixing buildings. Notably\, he had the opportunity to spend 8-10 weeks at a time out on Sable Island\, spending more than a year of his (many) days on the island. In 2019 Jordan joined the Geological Survey of Canada at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth to further his career in the geosciences\, where he has primarily been focussed on the geology of offshore wind energy\, coastal geomorphology\, and paleogeography.  \n  \nNell den Heyer – Fisheries Scientist\, Fisheries and Oceans Canada  \nNell was born and raised in Antigonish\, Nova Scotia and now lives in Halifax. She has a broad background in marine and freshwater ecology. She completed her MSc on CO2 and methane release from lake sediments at McGill University and then helped establish the Aquatic Resources Program at St. Francis Xavier University\, where she developed an interest in applied and participatory science.  She then completed her PhD at Dalhousie studying lobster movement in the Northumberland Strait and has been working at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography since completing her PhD.  As the DFO science lead for Atlantic Halibut\, she collaborated with industry to establish a multi-faceted research program for Atlantic halibut that has contributed to the sustainable management of one of Canada’s most valuable groundfish stocks.    \nSince 2016\, Nell has been leading the DFO Maritimes Seals Unit\, which has been studying seals on Sable Island for more than 60 years. Each winter when grey seals come to Sable to breed\, a team of 10-12 DFO and academic researchers come to Sable for 4-6 weeks to complete the long-term monitoring program and additional research projects on reproductive and foraging ecology. Sable Island provides unique opportunity to study marine mammals in their natural environment and understand their role in the northwest Atlantic ecosystem.    \n
