We hope you’ll join the discussion.  \nMeet the Speakers 👇 \nHannah MacDonald is the Fisheries Engagement Senior Program Manager at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI)\, where she leads GMRI’s fisheries engagement and offshore wind strategy across the Gulf of Maine. Her work ensures coastal and fishing communities are equipped to meaningfully shape offshore wind development through transparent\, science-based\, and locally grounded processes. She has led multi-state port visit campaigns\, launched GMRI’s Offshore Wind Resource Hub\, and is advancing coexistence strategies between floating offshore wind and fisheries through collaborative research. Hannah’s background includes science communication and policy work at NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries\, and her approach centers on building trusted relationships that bridge sectors and elevate community voices in fisheries management and ocean policy.   \nMichael Sutherland brings extensive\, long-standing experience bridging the fisheries and offshore renewable energy sectors. He currently advises on fisheries engagement and marine strategy for offshore wind projects across Scotland\, the UK\, and several proposed floating and fixed wind farms. Notably\, Michael played a key role in developing the Kincardine Floating Offshore Windfarm—a 50 MW project off northeast Scotland\, operational since October 2021 and the world’s largest floating wind farm. From project inception\, he guided KOWL on fisheries liaison\, license conditions\, and community engagement throughout installation and operation. \nPreviously\, Michael spent 26 years as Director of Policy and Operations at the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF)\, the lead trade body for Scotland’s fishing industry. There\, he shaped policy on submarine power cables and offshore renewables and established SFF Services Limited\, providing guard vessels and fisheries liaison services to the offshore energy sector. \nHe has also participated in fisheries and offshore energy discussions in Yarmouth and Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, including around potential offshore oil and gas development in the Bay of Fundy. \n

DESCRIPTION:Marine Renewables Canada (MRC) invites you to join us for a webinar on Wednesday\, January 15\, 2025 exploring opportunities in offshore wind in Latin America\, with a focus on Brazil. \n\nBrazil\, and more broadly Latin America (LATAM)\, has the potential to be an important export market for Canadian offshore wind (OSW) capabilities. A few countries like Brazil\, Colombia and Chile are making strides in OSW development. MRC has delved deeper into the Brazilian market specifically\, and boarder LATAM region\, to gather market intelligence and better understand market potential and entry points for MRC members and Atlantic Canadian companies. \nWith support from Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)\, MRC has commissioned a study to ascertain the realistic commercial opportunities for Canadian firms in the LATAM OSW development markets\, with specific emphasis on Brazil\, and align those with the capacity and competitive capabilities of the Atlantic Canadian service and supply chain. This study is meant to provide specific actionable advice that can improve the chances of commercial success by Canadian industrial supply chain companies to capture contracts on commercial terms in support of the development of the Brazilian OSW sector and provide a broader overview of other countries in LATAM that hold potential for OSW development. \nAs a follow-up activity to this study\, MRC will be leading a mission to Brazil in June 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your expertise and engage with an industry expert.  \nMeet the Speaker 👇 \nSean McDermott is a graduate of the University of British Columbia\, where he completed a degree in International Relations with an emphasis on China.  In 2000\, he moved to Shanghai and worked first with the Canada China Business Council and later with the Economist Intelligence Unit\, the business intelligence arm of The Economist Group.  In 2008\, Sean returned to Canada to pursue a Juris Doctorate at Dalhousie University\, where he graduated with a specialization in Environmental Law.  Upon graduation in 2011\, Sean began working in Toronto as a lawyer at Osler\, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP\, one of Canada’s leading corporate law firms\, where his practice focused on construction law and renewable energy project finance.  In March 2016\, Sean joined Northland Power Inc.\, one of Canada’s largest green energy project developers\, and thereafter relocated to Taiwan to develop the 1\,044 MW Hai Long Offshore Wind projects and the Taiwan Round 3 projects\, with emphasis on securing and negotiating Corporate Power Purchase Agreements. Sean and his family relocated to his hometown of Halifax\, Nova Scotia in August\, 2024\, from which he continues to provide local and global support for the development of early stage offshore wind projects.    \n

SUMMARY:MRC Webinar: Offshore Wind Energy in Atlantic Canada - Geological Constraints and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:The potential for offshore wind development in Atlantic Canada is quickly becoming a hot topic and with good reason – the region has some of the best sites in the world for both fixed and floating offshore wind development from both a wind resource and geophysical perspective. \nThis webinar will feature an overview of preliminary work led by the Geological Survey of Canada to assess geological constraints and opportunities. Several Atlantic Canadian sites with available high-resolution geophysical data will be reviewed for comparison with production and planned offshore wind farm sites found elsewhere. \nDate/Time: Wednesday\, May 25th @ 1pm ADT \nFormat:  \n\nIntroduction (5 min)\nPresentation (30 min)\nQ&A (15 min)\n\nSpeaker: Jordan Eamer\, Geological Survey of Canada \n \nJordan was born and raised on Vancouver Island in British Columbia\, where his research interests in coastal geomorphology and Quaternary geology developed. Jordan’s research has until recently been focussed on the coastal areas of BC\, where he worked up and down the coast in areas such as Haida Gwaii\, the Hakai Protected Area\, and western Vancouver Island. His focus was sediment budgets for coastal restoration projects\, climate change adaptation\, coastal erosion\, and late Quaternary reconstruction and paleogeography. He did a postdoc at the University of Calgary where he was a project manager/science advisor for UAV application development. \nFrom there\, Jordan took a bit of a turn (east\, to be precise) and joined the federal Public Service with Parks Canada Agency in 2017\, working for the Sable Island National Park Reserve. While there\, he worked in operations: landing planes\, forecasting storms\, and fixing buildings. He always kept his eye on the science and in 2019 Jordan joined the Geological Survey of Canada at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth as a Marine Geoscientist. \nCurrently\, Jordan works on issues from the coast to the edge of the continental shelf\, including coastal erosion and evolution\, Late Quaternary reconstruction of land- and seascapes and what processes led to the landform assemblages we find today\, and continental shelf seabed conditions\, infrastructure\, and marine renewables.
